The Protestant Bible contains 66 books, because it is a collection of books written over 6 centuries some of the books fit chronologically into the time of others. Our Bibles today are laid out by literary genre and there are various opinions as to what fits where, although there is general consensus around much of this as presented here. Some stories are told more than once for example Samuel-Kings and Chronicles cover much of the same time period although they each have different perspectives, similarly there are four books referred to as Gospels. (See Parallel Passages in the Historical Books and The Fourfold Gospel.) The book of Isaiah is shown here during the time of the kingdom of Judah, there are those who divide Isaiah into as many a four sections (more commonly three) and place the first part in the last days of Judah, some of it during the exile and other parts after the return. Psalms and Proverbs are also collections. Some of the psalms fit clearly into David's life but not all of the Psalms are from David, one, Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses so is clearly older than the time of David. Here the book of Psalms is put in the time of David as he is the author 75 of the 150 psalms. Proverbs begins "The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: (Proverbs 1.1)." The whole book is attributed to him although he likely was more the collector. In I Kings 4.32 we learn that "[Solomon] spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five." The book of Proverbs we have is an edited collection. The bulk of Paul's epistles fit into the time of the book of Acts, as do some of the general epistles. Acts ends rather abruptly but the Church continues and there is a collection of epistles that were written after the time covered in the book of Acts.
